Apple has unveiled the iPhone 5. The new flagship phone weighs in at 112 grams, 20 percent lighter than the iPhone 4S, and is 7.6mm thick, 18 percent thinner than its predecessor. A new 4-inch display has been added to the iPhone 5, with the resolution staying similar to the Retina display on the 4S, coming in at 1136 x 640, adding more pixels for a fifth row of icons on the homescreen.
Apple executive Phil Schiller said, “This is the most accurate display in the industry. The touch sensors are integrated right into the display itself. We removed a layer and made it sharper. This is the world’s most advanced display, and I couldn’t be prouder of it.” First-party apps have been updated to take advantage of the new real estate, and third-party apps should have no difficulty being updated, according to Schiller.
The iPhone 5 will take advantage of LTE networks around the world, thanks in part to Apple’s new ultrafast wireless technology. “There’s now a single chip for voice and data, and a single radio chip. And we have a unique Apple advantage with a dynamic antenna,” said Schiller. Wi-fi capabilities have also been upgraded to work on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz at up to 150mbps.
Apple has included the A6 processor in the iPhone 5, which we predicted back in March. The new SoC is 22 percent smaller than the A5, and performance has doubled in processing speeds and graphics over its predecessor. Apple has managed to increase the battery life in the iPhone 5, getting eight hours of LTE browsing, 10 hours of wi-fi browsing, and 225 hours of standby time out of the new handset.
A new iSight camera is present in the iPhone 5, and it looks good. An 8MP sensor, five-element lens with features like a hybrid IR filter, f/2.4 aperture, backside illumination, and enhancements such as dynamic low-light mode, precision lens alignment make this possibly the best camera ever in a mass-produced smartphone. The iSight camera allows the iPhone 5 to be 40 percent faster on photo capture than the 4S, and take stunning panorama shots. The front-facing camera has also been improved, with the iPhone 5 finally getting Facetime HD.
Apple has improved on the audio system of the iPhone 5, bringing an extra microphone for a total of three. An improved speaker design has allowed it to shrink by 20 percent. The iPhone 5 has a noise-canceling earpice, and wideband audio, which according to Schiller allows Apple to “fill up more of the frequency spectrum.”
With the iPhone 5, Apple has sent out the first major overhaul to the dock connector since its release in 2003. The new connector, dubbed ‘lighting’ is a reversible 8-signal cord designed for improved durablility. Don’t worry about your current 30-pin connector, Apple said there will be adapters available for the old connectors.
All of these features will utilize Apples new operating system, iOS 6. The iPhone 5 will be available on September 21st in the U.S., Canada, France, U.K., Germany, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia. Apple expects the device to be in 100 countries and on 240 carriers by December 2012. Prices start at $199 for the 16GB, $299 for the 32GB, and $399 for the 64GB version.
