Apple invites press to September 12th iPhone 5 Event: “It’s almost here”

Get ready, Apple fans: the new iPhone is now officially just a week away!

As expected, Apple has sent out invitations today summoning press to a special event on September 12th at 10AM PST, to be held at the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco. Cook & Co. will undoubtedly be using the event to announce the next-generation iPhone, though a few more surprises – such as a smaller iPad and new iPods – may also be in store. Interestingly, the shadow on the invite looks like a “5”, indicating that the new iPhone will indeed be called “iPhone 5”.

Thanks to a plethora of leaked photos, we already have a pretty clear picture of what the next iPhone will look like. The device will sport a taller 4″ touchscreen with a new resolution of 1136 x 640, allowing Apple to increase screen real estate while retaining the 326ppi Retina display quality of the iPhone 4S. The slightly elongated body of the new phone is expected to feature an aluminum unibody design with a two-tone back, as well as a relocated headphone jack, a new, smaller (possibly 9-pin) dock connector, and 4G LTE connectivity. Of course, nothing is official until we see Phil Schiller hold up the device on stage, and I’m willing to bet we haven’t yet seen the final form factor of the new iPhone.

Apple will also showcase the final version of iOS 6 at next week’s event, which will no doubt include some surprise features to tie-in with the new iPhone hardware. Many of the new features coming in iOS 6 were already shown off at WWDC back in June, including a “virtual wallet” called Passbook, a brand-new in-house Maps app, upgrades to Siri, and Facebook integration. Developers should expect to get their hands on the Golden Master version of iOS 6 immediately following next Wednesday’s event, while the public will likely get the update on or around September 19th – a few days before the new iPhone is expected to launch on September 21st.

As always, CE will be covering the Apple Event live at 10 AM PST/12PM EST on September 12th!
